Biography

Successful Countrified Melodic Rockers. ATLANTIS was founded in mid 1972 by former FRUMPY and CITY PREACHERS musicians Inga Rumpf on vocals, keyboard player Jean Jacques Kravetz, bassist Karl Heinz Schott along with ARMAGEDDON and EMERGENCY guitarist Frank Dietz and erstwhile EMERGENCY and ORANGE PEEL drummer Curt Cress.

After only a handful of gigs the band scored a deal and recorded their debut album in London followed by a British tour alongside PROCUL HARUM, TRAFFIC and VINEGAR JOE. However both Cress and Dietz left. Cress would join TRIUMVIRAT, PASSPORT and Canadians SAGA.

ATLANTIS roped in Udo Lindenberg and George Meier as temporary replacements. Permanent staff were found with TRAUMTORTE's Dieter Bornschlegel on guitar and JERONIMO drummer Ringo Funk for the second album 'Getting Better'. By now ATLANTIS had become immensely popular in Germany.

The band put in another British tour and gained a valuable 'Old Grey Whistle Test' television appearance. Kravetz left the band, later working with RANDY PIE and TOLLHOUSE, and ex FAMILY TREE man Rainer Schnelle took his place.

In 1974 the band fractured again with Schnelle and Bornschlegel losing their positions to CURLY CURVE guitarist Alex Conti and Englishman Adrian Askew. Bornschlegael would join GURU GURU.

This new ATLANTIS line up recorded the Funkified third album 'Ooh Baby' and a live double album.

1975 had ATLANTIS on tour in America as guests to LYNYRD SKYNYRD. Conti was unceremoniously dumped after these dates and Dietz made a return alongside second guitarist Rainer Marz. Conti created LAKE and ELEPHANT. By the 90's Conti was fronting ROSEBUD.

The band's experience in America showed with the next album 'Get On Board' which displayed a far Rockier stance. The album failed to match it's predecessor's sales though and a disillusioned Rumpf and Schott bailed out. A posthumous album featuring recordings from 1975-'76 was issued titled 'Top Of The Bill'. Funk joined KARTHAGO.

ATLANTIS made a one off comeback for a gig in Hamburg during 1983. Dietz joined RANDY PIE. Rumpf, Kravetz and Schott subsequently reformed FRUMPY in 1990.
