Previously entitled BLACK EMOTIONS under which title the band issued the 'Grimland Sight' EP in 2000. The group had been convened by drummer Jani Suopajärvi and bass player Tomi Torvinen in 1998, rapidly making up the numbers by drawing in vocalist / guitarist Juha Henttunen, previously having operated Black Metal solo project LORD OF PAGATHORN. In September of 1999 second bassist Joni Lehto and Jouni Nyrhinen enrolled but the latter's stay was brief.

As SETHERY, adding guitarist Henry Sonkajärvi and keyboard player Tommi Liukkonen but losing the services of Torvinen, the band re-debuted with the 'Retaliation' mini album that same year. During 2001 Sonkajärvi was replaced by Kalle Karinen. The 2002 'Bound In Hatred' EP featured a guest vocal appearance on the track 'Amen And Nightmare' by THYRANE's Blastmor. SETHERY's second full length album 'Kholera' would be recorded in April to May of 2003 at Kolmosstudio Rovaniemi and produced by Auvo Severinkangas. In February of 2004 Juha Henttunen joined MAPLE CROSS.
