Biography

IMPALED NAZARENE date back to November 1990 and have created a unique niche market for themselves in the Death Metal scene with their own brand of 'Cyber-Punk' Metal. The Oulu based band have leaned more towards Punk with each successive release and have landed themselves in hot water with the Finnish authorities by branding Russians as "Red scum". Bassist 'The fuck you man' is in fact SENTENCED's Taneli Jarva. The band's inaugural line-up comprised siblings Mika Luttinen on vocals and drummer Kimmo Luttinen, guitarists Ari Holappa and Mika Pääkkö plus bass player Anti Pihkala. Both Luttinen brothers were previously members of MUTILATION. The first song composition assembled by IMPALED NAZARENE was entitled 'Condemned To Hell', although early live sets also included MUTILATION numbers 'The Crucified' and 'Morbid Fate'.

IMPALED NAZARENE's presence was first felt in February 1991 when the debut demo emerged titled 'Shemhamforash'. The tape, which sported cover versions of DEICIDE's 'Crucifixation' and EXTREME NOISE TERROR's 'Conned Thru Life', was laid down by Eero Vuolukka on a primitive two track and saw the departure of Pihkala in favour of Harri Halonen. Was the first audio product to witness IMPALED NAZARENE's peculiar bent of blending the occult and sexual perversion, song titles such as 'Disgust Suite and 'Worms In Rectum' being the first in a long line of increasingly eccentric euphonies.

In April 1991 IMPALED NAZARENE put in their first live gig as support to BEHERIT in Kempele. Further shows ensued as openers to SENTENCED. The second demo session, 'Taog Eht Fo Htao Eht' ("The Oath Of The Goat") recorded at Tico Tico Studios in Keme by Ahti Kortelainen quickly followed in August. A noticeable shift in emphasis was focussed by Satanic themed song titles and artwork bearing a crude inverted crucifix. This ten track tape was capitalised on by a festival appearance at the Oulu 'Days Of Darkness' event alongside AMORPHIS. As an interesting diversion, Mikka Luttinen was issuing some less than savoury demos bearing the titles 'Glumph' and 'Never Mind Burzum...Here's Anus Cunt' from his twisted ANUS CUNT project.

A 7" single 'Goat Perversion' was released by the Italian Nosferatu concern in February 1992, after which both Holappa and Halonen decamped. 'Goat Perversion' had been produced by Ahti Kortelainen once again at Tico Tico the previous September. Although seemingly hosting four tracks the EP in fact bore a fifth, unaccredited, song in IMPALED NAZARENE's rendition of 'The Black Vomit', originally by cult blasphemous Brazilian band SARCOFAGO. Undeterred by the loss of two key players, IMPALED NAZARENE gigged for a while as a power trio. New recruit Taneli Jarva was drafted for in October recording a second single for French label Osmose Productions pairing 'Sadogoat' with a JOHNNY CASH cover 'Ghost Riders'. However, that same month, Pääkkö broke ranks and Jarno Anttila deputised on guitar. This roll would soon turn into a full time tenure.

Retaining Ahti Kortelainen as producer the debut February 1993 full-length album, 'Tol Cormpt Norz Norz Norz' on Osmose Productions, saw initial limited edition copies including an extra thirteen tracks comprising the earlier demos. Credits for the album, apparently "recorded faraway in pain and mistery XXVII Anno Satanas", went out to Mikaakim (Mika Luttinen) and Kimmoomik (Kimmo Luttinen) with Jarno Anttila and Taneli Jarva only given session status. Musically Tol Cormpt Norz Norz Norz' purveyed the very harshest of blackened Grindcore with the barked vocals making lyrics totally unintelligible. Sales were strong enough to break the Finnish national top forty album charts. IMPALED NAZARENE's third single, 'Satanic Masowhore', was backed on the flip side with their cover version of EXTREME NOISE TERROR's 'Conned Thru Life'. In July the band entered Tico Tico studios to record tracks to compile their second album 'Ugra-Karma' and the 'Satanic Masowhore' 7" EP. The 'Ugra Karma' effort, out in December and on which the group proclaimed their support for "nuclear energy and the destruction of the environment", came deceptively clad in a serene Madame Koslovsky depicting an Indian Goddess, which would come back to haunt the band in later years.

The band toured Europe with ANCIENT RITES in January 1994 upfront of recording third album 'Suomi Finland Perkele', switching from a previously announced intended album title of 'Hail To Finland'. Issued in October sporting three different coloured sleeve designs, the record's perceived right wing lyrics draw controversy and instructions were issued by French authorities to withdraw the album from the stores. Fortunately, sales were not unduly harmed as misinformation led to the band's previous album, 'Ugra Karma', being removed from racks. 'Suomi Finland Perkele' doubled the controversy when attention was drawn to the album dedication, the song 'Winter War' being "dedicated to those glorious who died by red scum". Embroiled in the resulting press frenzy, IMPALED NAZARENE set out on tour around Europe during April 1995 with Americans ABSU and Australia's SADISTIK EXEKUTION.

IMPALED NAZARENE were set to utilise Tico Tico once again in August for a planned EP given a working title 'Hamnasnas', but was shelved due to in fighting in the band. Bassist Taneli Jarva and founder member Sir Kimmo Luttinen decamped abruptly to concentrate on his solo projects ISÄNMAA, cutting the demo 'Yli Peltojen, Vetten Ja Tunturien', and LEGENDA. After Kimmo Luttinen's departure he also operated in parallel BEHERIT and would session for CATAMENIA. Reima Kellokoski took the IMPALED NAZARENE drum stool for October tour dates in Europe with MINISTRY OF TERROR and KRABATHOR. The group also put in their first British show headlining a Halloween event at London's Astoria.

In early 1996 the band added ex-BELIAL and OBFUSCATION bassist Jani Lehtosaari for recording of the 'Latex Cult', released in April 1996, and 'Motörpenis' EP outings. Both Jarva and the wayward Luttinen would later found THE BLACK LEAGUE.

The 'Motörpenis' mini-album featured covers of tracks from Finnish Punk acts FAFFBEY and TERVEET KADET as well as GANG GREEN's 'Alkohol'. Pushing 'Latex Cult', April 1996 had the band out on their lengthiest trek around Europe to date as part of the 'No Mercy' touring festival. IMPALED NAZARENE sharing the stage with CANNIBAL CORPSE, IMMOLATION, ROTTING CHRIST, KRABATHOR and GRAVE.

Recovering after these dates the band laid down an exclusive track 'I Am The Killer Of Trolls', in October 1996 at TicoTico, for the compilation album 'World Domination II'. 1996 was rounded off by a further bout of European touring with ANGEL CORPSE and GEHENNAH in December.

The band found themselves back in trouble in 1997 when the Hare Krishna movement objected to the use of artwork on the earlier 'Ugra Karma' album. Eventually this concern would be adressed outside of court, resulting in a re-issue of the record with new cover art. A relatively quiet year for the band excepting their legal woes, IMPALED NAZARENE put down instrumental demos in preperation for their next outing.

During the summer of 1998 the group, again on the road marketing the 'Rapture' album issued that April, put in further prominent international shows playing the Milwaukee Metalfest, gigs in Canada and a series of dates in Mexico. Film from the band's 'Tuska' festival appearance was used for a promotional video for the song 'Penis & Circes'. In September 1998 the band drafted THY SERPENT, CHILDREN OF BODOM and SINERGY guitarist Alex Laiho, this alliance having been cemented at a one off concert in St. Petersburg, Russia pairing IMPALED NAZARENE and CHILDREN OF BODOM. However, Laiho's commitments kept him out of the line-up for another round of European shows this time with DRILLER KILLER and RITUAL CARNAGE. Laiho did perform with the band in February 1999 on their second visit to North America and Mexico but cut short his commitment returning to Finland. Nevertheless, IMPALED NAZARENE undertook their first Japanese shows as a quartet. The band would not let up the live work and by April were back in Europe as part of the 'No Mercy III' festivals in alliance with PECCATUM, LIMBONIC ART, THE CROWN, EMPEROR and MORBID ANGEL. Still as a four piece the band also put in shows in far flung Australia and New Zealand, these latter shows in the August being supported by MALEVOLENCE. Surprisingly, here the group suffered its first concert casualty as a result of local community pressure when a concert in Wollongong, Australia was prevented. In New Zealand, both Mika Luttinen and Jarno Anttila were lucky to survive a car crash on the way to an Auckland concert. Upon their return to Finland in August, IMPALED NAZARENE took to Astia Studios in Lappeenranta to forge another album.

Erstwhile band member Sir Luttinen would find the time to become drummer for fellow Finns CATAMENIA. Meantime, IMPALED NAZARENE's 2000 release saw a split effort with DRILLER KILLER on Lehtosaari's Solardisk imprint. New album 'Nihil' surfaced in February 2000. A brace of Finnish gigs to coincide, sharing the stage with FINNTROLL and THRONE OF CHAOS, witnessed a brief re-acquaintance with Alex Laiho, after which the group appeared at the chaotic New Jersey 'March Metal Meltdown'. Tomi Ullgren of SHAPE OF DESPAIR and THY SERPENT was enlisted on guitar for the 'Assault The Weak' tour of France. This trek would be highlighted by a refusal by authorities for the band to sell any Satanic themed merchandise and IMPALED NAZARENE's conviction that they were being tailed by French "secret police". In May another partnership with CHILDREN OF BODOM conducted Greek gigs in Thessaloniki and Athens with Alex Laiho performing double duty each night. The 'Decade Of Decadence' ten year anniversary collection was cut at Astia in August and delivered in November.

The band's status was now such that several bootleg singles and albums, most notably 'Live In The Name Of Satan', seeped onto the market. In the autumn of 2000 it was announced that both Laiho and Lehtosaari, the latter joining SINVISION, had fled the fold with new members plugging the gap being THY SERPENT and BARATHRUM guitarist Teemu Raimovanta (a.k.a. 'Somnium' )of FINNTROLL and bass player Mikael Arnkil, known previously as drummer for ANTIDOTE and ABHORRENCE. A concert at the Nosturi venue in Helsinki in December 2000 saw a group roster with Tomi Ullgren on guitar and Raimoranta temporarily on bass as Arnkil had not learned the set.

In March 2001 IMPALED NAZARENE renewed their business relationship with Osmose Productions, re-signing for a further two albums. Czech gigs in April debuted Mikael Arnkil on bass but with Jarno Anttila unable to attend Tomi Ullgren deputised. Major Finnish festival appearances, at Tuska Open Air and at Koria Open Air in July, were preceded by a Down By The Laituri at Turku gig notable for a one off re-adoption of corpsepaint. In September 2001 IMPALED NAZARENE issued the 'Absence Of War Does Not Mean Peace' album, promoted by a video for the track 'Hardboiled And Still Hellbound' enhanced by the presence of porn actress Rakel Liekki. Successive live work involved shows at the London X-Mass festival, in Italy and, as a union with FINNTROLL, in Moscow in March 2002. In July a memorable performance at the With Full Force event in Leipzig, Germany caught IMPALED NAZARENE hitting the stage at 4.35 am. Another gig at Tuska Open Air followed, with a show at Ilosaari Rock held on the very same day. Further festivals included Headbanger's Fest in Lisbon, Portugal and the group's Norwegian debut as headliner at the Bergen A Hole In The Sky show. Another first came with a gig in Tallinn, Estonia in October with the year being capped in December with the X-Mass festival European tour together with MARDUK, IMMOLATION, EXODUS, SIX FEET UNDER, KATAKLYSM, MACABRE, RAGNAROK, HATE ETERNAL and ANTAEUS.

During early 2003 IMPALED NAZARENE drummer Reima Kellokoski (a.k.a. 'Repe F.W. Misanthrope') established the blackened Death Metal side concern SHADOW CUT.

IMPALED NAZARENE man Teemu 'Somnium' Raimoranta died on 16th March 2003 at the exceptionally young age of just 25. Apparently the guitarist suffered fatal injuries from a fall off Helsinki's Pitkäsilta bridge onto ice below. At the time official reports stated Raimoranta had met his death accidentally although subsequently Mikka Luttinen claimed he had jumped voluntarily. The band brought in ANTIDOTE guitarist Tuomo Louhio for recording of the album 'All That You Fear'. Gigs were announced for early 2004 in league with THE LEGION but these dates would then be cancelled.

The band performed an unusual concert dubbed the '34'000 Ton Metal Cruise' on 25th September, performing onbard the Münchenbryggeriet car ferry in Stockholm, Sweden alongside TANKARD, AMON AMARTH, HYPOCRISY, TAD MOROSE, STORMWARRIOR, SKYCLAD and WOLF.

IMPALED NAZARENE, working with their sound engineer Tapio Pennanen, would plan on recording three Italian gigs in September, in the towns of Milan, Catania, Ascoli, for a live album. Unfortunately the band arrived at Milan to find their equipment had not arrived, forcing them to use the support band's gear, and both shows in Catania and Ascoli could not provide adequate digital recording gear. Undaunted, the group resolved to record a subsequent show in Stockholm but only captured three songs on tape due to a mid show electricity cut. IMPALED NAZARENE's bad luck carried on into Russia when, just before a concert in Moscow, Mika Luttinen claimed he was drugged. After passing out and being revived by smelling salts, Luttinen and the band performed the show. The group announced they would attempt to record a December gig at the Tavastia club in Helsinki to finally get the tracks for the live record 'Death Comes In 26 Carefully Selected Pieces'.

European shows for January 2005 found IMPALED NAZARENE in union with YYRKOON and PHAZM. In June IMPALED NAZARENE confirmed they had re-signed with Osmose Productions for two more albums, first entering Sonic Pump studios with producer Tapio Pennanen on November 21st to begin recording the new album 'Pro Patria Finlandia'. IMPALED NAZARENE embarked on a lengthy round of European dates throughout April and May 2006 seeing staged supports first from Switzerland's DARK RISE, then Italians RESURRECTURIS before MASTER and ZUUL FX jumped onboard to close the dates. Swedish Death Metal act ZONARIA were later added to the bill. Italian concerts in November, in Padova, Rome and Bologna, saw HANDFUL OF HATE as support.

In 2007 both the 1996 'Latex Cult' and 1998 'Rapture' albums were re-issued as expanded formats with all new artwork and remastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox studio. 'Latex Cult' added bonus material in the form of live tracks recorded at La Laiterie club in Strasbourg in 1996, 'Total War - Winter War', 'Soul Rape', 'Punishment Is Absolute' and 'Mortification/Blood Red Razor Blade'. The 'Rapture' re-issue hosted cover versions of SODOM's 'Burst Command ´til War' and 'Nuclear Metal Retaliation', plus eight live tracks, also taken from the same Strasbourg show, in 'Transvestite', a TERVEET KÄDET cover, 'Motorpenis', 'Bashing In Heads', 'I Eat Pussy For Breakfast', 'Whore', 'Violence I Crave', 'Goat Perversion' and 'Hoath: Darbs Lucifero'.
