HORNA is a literal translation of 'Hell'. The band evolved from the 1993 band SHADOWED led by guitarists Shatraug and Moredhel. In 1994, with the addition of drummer Gorthaur the act became HORNA. During this formative stages various members drifted in and out of the ranks including bassist Nazgul Von Armageddon. HORNA's first product was the 1995 demo 'Varjoissa'. Nazgul was re-recruited although this time as a lead vocalist. A further tape 'Hiidentorni' followed in 1997 which was pressed onto CD by Solistitium Records.

1998 saw the departure of guitarists Moredhel and Skratt. European dates saw HORNA employing stand in musicians prior to the band being put on ice whilst members undertook their military service. During this period Gorthaur would also be performing drum tasks for fellow Black Metal band BATTLELORE. Shatraug proved industrious too, cutting the side projects BATTLE with the demo 'War Messiah' and MIRKHALL's 'Ring To Rule'. Nazgul von Armageddon meantime guested on EVEMASTER's 'Lacrimae Mundi' opus.

Late 1998 saw the recruitment of Thanatos and the return of Moredhel. During 1999 HORNA issued a split 7" single with American act FOG and a further split 'Noidanloitsu' with fellow Finns MUSTA SURMA for the French End All Life label arrived the following year. That year Shatraug fired up further band endeavours with SARGEIST and the 'Exördium-Niedergang' demo credited to RAVENING. Gorthaur initiated a side project in 1999, working with BATTLELORE and DEEPRED guitarist Tommi Havo and bassist Jyri Vahvanen ('J. Seneter') in KALMISTO. They would sign this side endeavour to the Iso666 label, switching title to KHERT-NETER, for the 2000 album 'Arrival of the Funeral Dogs'.

Von Armageddon would guest as session vocalist for fellow Finns DAWN OF RELIC on their debut 'One Night In Carcosa' album. HORNA members would also be involved with the Egyptian themed Death Metal venture KHERT-NETER during 2000. That same year Shatraug managed a further MIRKHALL recording, 'Winter Of Tragedies Reign'. Alongside guitarist Lord War Torech the HORNA mainman would also forge SATANIC WARMASTER, bowing in with the 'Bloody Ritual' demo upfront of a November 2001 album 'Strength And Honour'.

The 2002 HORNA line-up, now without Von Armageddon in the ranks, would comprise of vocalist Sin. K, guitarists Shatraug and Aarni T. Otava, bassist Vrasjarn and drummer Gorthaur. Woodcut Records would re-release all four HORNA albums as one double CD package in early 2002. The band's 'Korpin Hetki' EP would include a cover version of IMPALED NAZARENE's 'Condemned To Hell'.

A split 7" EP with OUROBOROS, entitled 'Tasta Alkavat Minun Vuoteni', was projected for 2003. Following an appearance at the Finnish 'Tuska' festival HORNA severed ties with guitarist Aarni T. Otava. The 2003 Woodcut EP 'Viha Ja Viikate' included a cover version of CARPATHIAN FOREST's 'Kun 1000 Kuuta On Kiertanyt'. A further split effort, 'Orjaroihu', would be shared with DESOLATION TRIUMPHALIS.

HORNA releases in early 2004 included the 'Verivuosi' split single with ARMAGEDDON through Undercover Records, the 'Talismaani' picture disc 7" on Static Supernova and the 'Juuret' 7" split offering allied with WOODS OF INFINITY via Klaxon Productions. Also scheduled would be the full length album 'Envaatnags Eflos Solf Esgantaavne' through Woodcut, these sessions seeing Ravenum on drums. In mid 2005 From Beyond Productions issued a split EP, naturally limited to 666 copies, shared with Russian band BLACKDEATH entitled 'Vihan Stigmat'.

HORNA, down to a recording duo of Shatraug and Corvus, released their fifth album, "Ääniä Yössä", in June 2006 via Debemur Morti Productions.
