Biography

Formed in Taastrup, Copenhagen during 1982 by the Stützer brothers, guitarist Michael and bassist Morten with Carsten Neilson on drums, ARTILLERY was without qustion one of the very earliest European Thrash Metal bands. Vocalist Per Onink, hailing from various obscure Danish bands, originally fronted the band. However, following a riot at one of ARTILLERY's early gigs, Onink was given his marching orders and replaced by Carsten Lohmann. With their new vocalist ARTILLERY issued the impressive demos, 'Shellshock' and 'Deeds Of Darkness', and succeeded in grabbing a lot of attention from the underground Metal press. Lohmann left shortly after and in came Flemming Rønsdorf. ARTILLERY's next demo, 'Fear Of Tomorrow', secured them a deal with the Newcastle Upon Tyne based Neat Records to release the highly rated debut album 'Fear Of Tomorrow' in 1985.

The band's subsequent album, 1987's 'Terror Squad', received similar rave reviews to the debut despite having probably one of the worst album covers of all time due to Neat asking the band to design their own record sleeve. Following the record's release the band suffered the loss of bassist Morten Stützer, who left the band for a period before re-entering the fold in 1988.

ARTILLERY would, without much fanfare in the Western world, become one of the first outside Rock acts to perform in the Soviet Union. As part of the cultural 'Next Stop' programme ARTILLERY, alongside Danish Punks SORT SOL, performed a number of sold out Russian gigs. However, over enthusiastic fans incited a vicious backlash from security forces and ARTILLERY were duly banished as being a decadent influence. The group took a five day train journey on the Trans Siberian Express back to Europe immortalised later on the song '07:00 From Tashkent'.

ARTILLERY struggled on, but eventually broke up the same year with Morten Stützer joining FURIOUS TRAUMA. However, within nine months the brothers had left their respective bands to reform ARTILLERY with Ronsdorf and ex-FURIOUS TRAUMA bassist Michael Rasmussen. Before too long Rasmussen was out in favour of ex-FORCE MAJEURE and APOCALYPSE bass player Peter Thorslund, which enabled Morten Stützer to switch to guitar. The band toured Denmark and even slotted in a show in Russia before recording a new demo with METALLICA producer Flemming Rasmussen. Switching to Roadrunner Records the band entered Sweet Silence Studio in Copenhagen with Rasmussen to record the 'By Inheritance' album. However, shortly after ARTILLERY folded with the Stützer brothers founded MISSING LINK whilst Flemming Rønsdorf joined RUBBERBAND, a bar band covering songs by THE BEATLES with the ex-ARTILLERY man playing the part of JOHN LENNON. Michael Stützer would also find a new interest as a Heavy Metal DJ, hosting his own radio show aptyly named 'Terror Squad'.

With their influence on the European Metal scene being recognised, partly due to the 1998 Mighty Music compilation of archive material 'Deadly Relics', ARTILLERY returned in August of that year for a one off gig in Copenhagen and were promptly offered a deal for a reunion album with Diehard Records, culminating in the 2000 'B.A.C.K.' album, recorded at Starstruck Studios. Session drums would be handled by Per Jensen of THE HAUNTED, KONKHRA and INVOCATOR fame. Former SABBAT guitarist Andy Sneap finalised the production values.

The band made another comeback in November of 2004 with a one off gig at The Rock venue in Copenhagen. For this show vocalist Flemming Rønsdorf and guitarists Michael and Morten Stützer would be joined by HATESPHERE bassist Mikael Ehler and drummer Anders Gyldenøhr.

ARTILLERY put in a high profile European festival show at the 'Keep It True' event at the Tauberfrankenhalle in Lauda-Königshofen, Germany on April 14th 2007 alongside British bands DIAMOND HEAD and SABBAT, US outfits LÄÄZ ROCKIT, LETHAL and TWISTED TOWER DIRE, Canadians CAULDRON and PILEDRIVER, Dutchmen DEFENDER and Swedish band BULLET.

In 2008 Polish label Metal Mind Productions re-released ARTILLERY's debut album 'Fear Of Tomorrow' in a digipak edition limited to 2000 copies. This version added seven bonus tracks and was digitally remastered using 24-Bit process on golden disc. The re-issue was made available on 21st July in Europe and 2nd September 2008, via MVD, in the USA.

A brand new studio album, 'When Death Comes', was released in June 2009 through Metal Mind Productions. The album was recorded at Medley Studios in Copenhagen with producer Søren Andersen. Japanese editions featured three extra tracks in 'Refuse to Live - Part II', 'Warhead' and 'Chaos Ride'.
