Biography

Highly regarded and innovative Jazz flavoured Death Metal act GORGUTS was founded in Québec during 1989. In 1990 the band released a pro-demo called '...And Then Comes Lividity', which caught the attention of some record companies and they were soon signed to Roadrunner Records. The group at this stage comprised vocalist / guitarist Luc Lemay, bassist Eric Giguere, drummer Stephane Provencher with Gary Chouinard on second guitar. Very early on the band established themselves as one of the leading Death Metal acts forging associations with a number of Florida bands. GORGUTS even had Chris Barnes, ex-CANNIBAL CORPSE, SIX FEET UNDER, and journeyman guitarist JAMES MURPHY of OBITUARY, CANCER, appear on the debut, 1991's Scott Burns produced 'Considered Dead', recorded at Morrisound Studios, in Tampa, Florida, as guest stars. Murphy donated a solo to 'Inoculated Life' whilst Barnes' unmistakable tones were lent to 'Bodily Corrupted',

'Rottenatomy' and 'Hematological Allergy'. At this juncture the quartet, spearheaded by the gut wrenching growls of vocalist Luc LeMay, comprised guitarist Sylvian Marcoux, bass player Eric Giguere and drummer Stephane Provender.

However, GORGUTS returned from a 1993 European tour promoting the second album, 1993's 'Erosion Of Sanity', to discover they had been dropped by Roadrunner Records. The band also splintered at this juncture losing both their drummer and a guitarist. New faces were PURULENCE guitarist Steve Hurdle and PSYCHIC THROB bass player Steve Cloutier. This new formation signed to Olympic Recordings.

Following the recording of the Pierre Remillard produced 'Obscura' opus GORGUTS drafted Steve McDonald as drummer in September 1998 to replace the recently departed Patrick Robert. With this line up GORGUTS undertook the 'Death Across America' tour alongside running mates NILE, CRYPTOPSY and OPPRESSOR.

Before the close of 1999 guitarist Daniel Mongrain, whilst retaining his ties to his own act MARTYR, would join GORGUTS replacing Hurdle and appearing on their 'From Wizdom To Hate' album.

Luc LeMay would guest on MARTYR's 2000 album 'Warp Zone'. Steve McDonald would also unite with ASGARD in mid 2002. However, on October 19th the sad news was learned that McDonald had committed suicide by hanging himself. Apparently the drummer had been battling depression for many years.

Luc Lemay made studio time in early 2004 to donate his services to the DEATH tribute album 'Within The Mind' assembled by JAMES MURPHY. In October of that year Dan Mongrain acted as stand in guitarist for CRYPTOPSY. During the Autumn of 2005 former GORGUTS members Steve Hurdle and Luc Lemay returned to the fore with a new project called NEGATIVA, the band being completed by Dominic Lapointe of QUO VADIS, AUGURY and ATHERETIC on bass alongside Etienne Gallo from AUGURY on drums. Lemay revealed in October that GORGUTS had been laid to rest and that he intended to concentrate on his career as a self-taught furniture maker.

'Considered Dead' and 'Erosion Of Sanity' were re-issued in CD format during November 2006 by Displeased Records in Europe and Caroline in the USA the following January.
