Biography
Infamous Toronto, Ontario Thrash Metal band. The figure known as PILEDRIVER was in fact one Gord Kirchin, previously a bass player and singer with INCOGNITO, MAINSTREAM, a 1982 incarnation of FIST and also U.N. Although not initially intended to be a serious band unit PILEDRIVER's quite angle approach to image and songwriting resulted in some exceptionally healthy album sales.
MAINSTREAM vocalist Louise Remy aided on lyrics for the first album 'Metal Inquisition' whilst MAINSTREAM's Leslie Howe recorded guitar. Although originally planned as a pure money making exercise PILEDRIVER's use of bondage artwork and deliberately provocative song titles could not hide the fact that the songs were actually rather well done. Consequently the album sold exceptionally well and was licensed worldwide. The totally fictitious band was listed as Piledriver, guitarists Bud Slaker and Knuckles Akimbo with drummer Former Lee. In North America the song titles were deemed to obscene hence 'Alien Rape' became 'Alien Dead', 'Sex With Satan' became 'Devil's Lust' and 'Sodomize The Dead' was changed to 'Twister'.
After recording of 'Metal Inquisition' Kirchin joined ICE but was recalled to perform on another PILEDRIVER album. The sophomore effort 'Stay Ugly' included anonymous contributions from VIRGIN STEELE men David DeFeis and Eddie Pursino.
Once again fake musicians names were used in guitarists Bruizer Bernette and John Savage, bassist Sal Gibson and drummer Hammer. Of interest was the track 'Fire God', subsequently re-worked by VIRGIN STEELE for their album 'The House of Atreus - Act I'.
Kirchin planned to take PILEDRIVER on the road and drafted vocalist guitarist Jim Doherty and guitarist Sean Abbott. By 1989 PILEDRIVER had a new look with Randy Deeg on guitar and Bend Quieser on drums. The latter soon departed as sessions for a future third PILEDRIVER album to be titled 'Shock' was written with Kirchin's brother Randy on second guitar. The last PILEDRIVER incarnation included the Kirchin brothers, guitarist Dave Copeland and drummer Ruston Baldwin.
Kirchin would also contribute anonymously to the CONVICT album 'Go Ahead Make My Day'. Kirchin and Copeland, with new drummer Shawn Tilley, would later use this projected PILEDRIVER material in his new act DOGS WITH JOBS.
Following two DOGS WITH JOBS albums Kirchin created SOFA Q. The 90's reissue of 'Metal Inquisition' on High Vaultage Records in Germany included an interview with 'Piledriver'. PILEDRIVER reunited in 2004 under the revised brand THE EXALTED PILEDRIVER, projecting a 2005 album dubbed 'Metal Manifesto'.With Kirchin being the only surviving member, this new look act featured guitarist Ron The Tyrant, bassist Andrew Postmaster General, and drummer Tupak Sade. The bass position was soon in the hands of SubSlime FaceKicker whilst Troy "Evil E" Ellis was added on guitar. THE EXALTED PILEDRIVER underwent membership changes in 2005, drafting guitarists Johnny "No Heart" Butts and DesTroyYa Hellis.
THE EXALTED PILEDRIVER recorded the demo 'Metal Manifesto' and issued a DVD, 'Official Live Bootleg Shpinsk, Batslavia', in 2005. The next year the group shifted shape once again, pulling in guitar player Kinky Pork Cream and drummer Glace Frothfritter.
The band put in a high profile European festival show at the 'Keep It True' event at the Tauberfrankenhalle in Lauda-Königshofen, Germany on April 14th 2007 alongside British bands DIAMOND HEAD and SABBAT, US outfits LÄÄZ ROCKIT, LETHAL and TWISTED TOWER DIRE, Denmark's ARTILLERY, fellow Canadians CAULDRON, Dutchmen DEFENDER and Swedish band BULLET.
Northern Storm Records released the album 'Metal Manifesto' in October 2008.
