Biography
MOXY evolved from a late 60's band titled LEIGH ASHFORD. Previous to fronting LEIGH ASHFORD the notorious rebel rousing singer Douglus 'Buzz' Shearman and cut his teeth with SHEARMAN & PEABODY, a trio that including Greg Godovitz (a.k.a. Peabody) later to create GODDO and a future TRIUMPH drummer Gil Moore. Shearman then joined FLAPPING, an act which supplied most of the members for IAN THOMAS's first band TRANQUILITY BASE, before teaming up with LEIGH ASHFORD. The name change to MOXY came with the band's first independent single on the small Yorkville label. This record soon secured a deal with major label Polydor. At this stage MOXY comprised of Shearman, guitarist Earl Johnson, ex MANDALA bassist Dan Elliott and former MANCHILD drummer Jack Flynn. Elliott would make way for Kim Frased who was soon in turn replaced by Terry Juric.
Former BRUTUS drummer Bill Wade took Flynn's position. With BRUTUS Wade had gone under the surreal pseudonym of Hally Hunter. BRUTUS had also included guitarist Gino Scarpelli later of GODDO.
MOXY made their entrance with an eponymous 1976 album with a second guitarist Buddy Caine. The debut album, recorded in Los Angeles, had MOXY jamming with a TOMMY BOLIN (prior to his DEEP PURPLE days). These tapes were later released as part of a collection of the guitarist's early work. 'Moxy II' saw the band working with famed AEROSMITH producer Jack Douglas.
For 1978's Jack Richardson produced 'Under The Light's LOVERBOY featured the new recruits of vocalist Mike Rynowski and drummer Danny Bilan. Scott Cushnie supplied keyboards. Shearman's wild lifestyle had forced his departure from the band. Undeterred, the erstwhile MOXY singer put together BUZZ SAW with drummer Frank Russell and ex-CHRISTMAS guitarist Bob Bulger.
Meantime, MOXY's liaison with Rynowski had not worked out and Shearman was invited back into the band. MOXY toured America and built up loyal support and strong radio play. However, Shearman's out of control lifestyle forced his sacking following the 'Riding High' album. Rynowski adopted the new name of Mike Reno to become vocalist for multi-platinum act LOVERBOY. Juric joined THOR for his 1978 album 'Keep The Dogs Away' and appears on Pop Rocker STANLEY FRANK's 1980 album 'Play Til It Hurts'. Bilan would later turn up on HANOVER FIST's 1986 'Hungry Eyes' album and MICHAEL WHITE's 'White' album of 1992.
Bilan, Maxim, Juric and Caine would also form a project band titled VOODOO. Wade founded BONGO FURY with GODDO's Gino Scarpelli and bassist Terry McKeowen for one ill fated album. Wade can also be found on THE CRY's 1980 album.
Shearman was tragically killed in a motorbike accident in 1983.
The band would re-unite for a welcome studio album 'Moxy V' although would be laid to rest with the passing of Bill Wade on Friday July 27th 2001. The drummer had fought a lengthy battle with cancer but had kept news of his illness private.
In early 2002 it was announced that MOXY, with new drummer Kim Hunt, had signed to the Bullseye label for a re-issue of 'Moxy IV' complete with two extra live tracks 'Still I Wonder' and 'Young Legs'. Also projected was an upcoming live album entitled 'Raw' and a fresh studio record for 2003. MOXY put on two high profile gigs in the first quarter playing alongside fellow special guests SAXON in April at the annual LEGS DIAMOND bash at the Sunken Gardens in San Antonio, Texas and in May at the Toronto Phoenix Concert Theater with veteran colleagues SANTERS and GODDO.
The 2003 MOXY roster comprised guitarists Buddy Caine and Earl Johnson, A FOOT IN COLDWATER vocalist Alex Machin, former ZON bass player Jim Sampson and the ZON, HANNOVER FIST and URGENT credited drummer Kim Hunt.
The band had their track 'Out Of The Darkness' covered on OVERDRIVE and LOCOMOTIVE BREATH guitarist Janne Stark's November 2006 MOUNTAIN OF POWER tribute collection.
2008 concerts saw MOXY fronted by KILLER DWARFS singer Russ Dwarf (a.k.a. Russell Graham).
