Biography
A Toronto, Ontario act that blended Hard Rock sensibilities with an overriding sense of consumate CONEY HATCH's quite unique accessibility would win the band many fans on the international circuit but oddly the act's career would last a mere three albums. Vocalist CARL DIXON, recruited from a newspaper ad, had previously been a member of FIREFLY. He fronted a band comprising co-lead vocalist / bassist Andy Curran, guitar player Steve Shelski and drummer Dave "Thumper" Ketchum. Initial demos led to a contract with Anthem Records.
The debut eponymous record, released in 1982 and produced by KIM MITCHELL at Quest Recording Studios in Oshawa, Ontario, created quite a stir on the global Rock scene. The band being praised for their songwriting skills and heightened sense of melody. Indeed, ALDO NOVA would subsequently cover 'Hey Operator'. High profile tour work to promote the record saw CONEY HATCH touring no less than 25 shows as support to JUDAS PRIEST across Canada and the USA.
The 1983 'Outa Hand' album found the band working with famed producer Max Norman but had many fans hankering after the quality of songs displayed on the opening record. Road work saw CONEY HATCH as opening act on a 40 date US tour fronted up by FASTWAY and IRON MAIDEN. CONEY HATCH added drummer Barry Connors in place of Dave Ketchum for 1985's highly rated 'Friction' opus. Once again produced by Max Norman 'Friction' would soon go down in Rock history as a lost classic. ALIAS vocalist FREDDY CURCI adds backing vocals.
A latter day credited vocalist, WINTER ROSE's James LaBrie, would go on to front American Progressive Rock act DREAM THEATER.
A posthumous CONEY HATCH compilation album, entitled 'Best Of Three', included two B side tracks; 'Where I Draw the Line' and 'Fuel For The Fire'. The individual members kept their hand in following the break up of the band. Guitarist Steve Shelski sessioned on GOWAN's 1987 album 'Lost Brotherhood'. Curran formed SOHO 69 whilst Dixon formed ROUGH AND READY in 1988. The following year CONEY HATCH performed reunion shows.
ANDY CURRAN issued an eponymous solo album in 1990 which saw vocal contributions from CARL DIXON. Both Shelski and Curran turn up on CARL DIXON's 1992 solo album 'One'. Bringing matters full circle Curran was the main songwriter for KIM MITCHELL's 1999 album 'Kimosabe'. CARL DIXON would issue a sophomore solo outing in 2001 'Into The Future' which once again found both Curran and Shelski contributing.
CONEY HATCH reunited in 2004, putting in an appearance at the June Sölvesborg 'Sweden Rock' festival. Dixon, following a stint with THE GUESS WHO, enrolled into the ranks of veteran Rockers APRIL WINE, featuring on the 2003 double album 'Greatest Hits Live'.
