Biography
Superb Canadian AOR band blessed with huge songwriting potential and the rich vocal tones of Johnnie Dee (Degiuli). HONEYMOON SUITE was founded in Niagra Falls by Dee, guitarist Derry Grehan and bassist Brian Blackstone in 1982. The band's song 'New Girl Now', released on a 1983 compilation album highlighting local talent, landed the band a deal with WEA Records as HONEYMOON SUITE were brought up to strength with former TORONTO bassist Gary Lalonde and drummer Dave Betts, previously with STEVE BLIMKIE & THE REASON.
Their 1984 debut album, although a rather lightweight affair, proved an instant success and launched four Canadian hit singles. The band toured Canada supporting numerous acts including BRYAN ADAMS, JETHRO TULL and APRIL WINE. Headline gigs followed in 1985.
HONEYMOON SUITE's international recognition came with their sublime Bruce Fairbairn produced second album 'The Big Prize'. JETHRO TULL's IAN ANDERSON featured flute on the track 'All Along You Knew'. The album went past the platinum sales mark in Canada almost immediately as its predecessor followed suit. The promotion for the album took the band into America as guests to JOURNEY, HEART and ZZ TOP. The band then toured Europe as support to fellow Canucks SAGA.
Dee and Lalonde made their presence felt on the charity act VOICES WITH THE HEART's 1986 record 'I Am Your Child'. Grehan guested on the debut FROZEN GHOST album in 1987. HONEYMOON SUITE also cut a new track 'Lethal Weapon' for the Mel Gibson movie 'Lethal Weapon II' the same year. The band also received a Juno award for 'Group Of The Year'.
For the 1988 album 'Racing After Midnight', produced by Ted Templeman, the band enlisted a new keyboard player Rob Preuss, previously with SPOONS. The act's schedule was put back severely though when Dee was run over by a car just outside Los Angeles airport. Laid up in hospital and requiring a 10 inch metal rod to stabilize his leg Dee was forced out of pre-production. Fortunately for the band DOOBIE BROTHERS man Michael McDonald cut the guide vocals and upon his recovery Dee laid down the final versions.
European dates supporting STATUS QUO ensued although the band did not manage North American dates, which adversely affected their sales.
1991's 'Monsters Under The Bed' witnessed an all new line up with Coburn resuming his position but Lalonde and Betts out. New members were ex BILLY IDOL and ALANNAH MYLES bassist Steve Webster and drummer Jörn Andersen. 1992 found Tom Lewis taking the bass position.
HONEYMOON SUITE's line up in 1995 comprised of Dee, Grehan, Coburn, bassist Tim Harrington and drummer Creighton Doane. This unit released a well received live album.
A further period of flux resulted in Coburn departing again to join ALANNAH MYLES band, his place being occupied by ex-GOWAN and THE JITTERS man Peter Nunn. Other new faces in 1996 were former RIK EMMETT men Steve Skingley and drummer Troy Feener. Andersen, Nunn and Webster all appeared on the JOHN THOMAS solo album of 1995. Coburn toured with CRASH TEST DUMMIES.
Miczek joined BLOOD RED FLOWER, the band led by ex-TALAS and CHAIN REACTION singer PHIL NARO. The bassist would also appear on the ex-KISS guitarist MARK ST. JOHN PROJECT mini album of 1999. Tom Lewis would later be found as a member of VON GROOVE.
HONEYMOON SUITE regrouped with bassist Stan Miczek, a scene campaigner of KIM MITCHELL, SASS JORDAN, HELIX and Heavy Metal act RAMPAGE, and TARA CAIN drummer Brett Carrigan for Canadian touring in 2001 and would announce a comeback album, 'Lemon Tongue', for release through Bullseye Records the following year. Latterly the veteran session bassist Rob Laidlaw has teamed up with the band, a man whose impressive CV includes stints with GYPSY ROSE, WINTER ROSE, LEE AARON, KIM MITCHELL, RIK EMMETT and ALANNAH MYLES.
The band would announce a deal with the Italian Frontiers label in early 2002, the first fruits of this liaison being the 'Dreamland' album. The record included some material from the earlier Canadian only issued 'Lemon Tongue'. A rare UK appearance, at the 'Gods' festival in Bradford on 4th June would be recorded and captured on film for the subsequent 'HMS Live' album and DVD.
HONEYMOON SUITE frontman Johnnie Dee, going by his real name of JOHNNIE DEGIULI, issued a low key solo debut in December of 2003. Featured guests included band colleagues Derry Grehan and Ray Coburn as well as KIM MITCHELL and TRIUMPH frontman RIK EMMETT. During January and February 2006 the band united with GLASS TIGER for a series of Canadian dates.
The album 'Clifton Hall', named after the location where the band was formed 25 years previously, emerged in October 2008.
