Biography

BRYAN ADAMS has carved a unique, and major, slice of Rock history for himself by taking hard driving guitar orientated Melodic Rock to the masses and crossing over into general mainstream appeal on both sides of the Atlantic. Consistently Adams has proven himself time and time again as a song writer par excellence. Adams had co-written tracks for KISS, PRISM and LOVERBOY before finding fame for himself as a solo artist in his own right.

During the mid seventies Adams had been a member of the band SWEENEY TODD. A 1976 single 'Roxy Roller', fronted by original lead singer Nick Gilder, made a minor dent in the US. When Adams took over the lead vocal role the single was re-issued with Adams cutting new vocal tracks. This re-release made it to no. 99 on Billboard.

His debut 1980 solo album, recorded at Mushroom Studios in Vancouver, sees contributions from numerous session musicians. Bass guitar comes from APRIL WINE, 451 DEGREES and BACHMAN TURNER OVERDRIVE man Jim Clench, erstwhile BRAVE BELT and BACHMAN TURNER OVERDRIVE man Fred Turner, Peter Bjerring and David Hungate. Country guitar is added by THE DOOBIE BROTHERS Jeff Baxter. One surprise guest is ex-COLOSSEUM man Dick Heckstall-Smith on percussion. A promotional video for the single 'Remember' featured LOVERBOY's Matt Frenette as drummer, although he did not perform on the original recording.

Adams hit the road in the summer of 1981 promoting an album whose accelerated sales as 1982 kicked into gear forced the pace of touring well into the following year. By the end of a nine-month trek across America Adams has opened for LOVERBOY, FOREIGNER and THE KINKS amongst others. The 1982 album 'You Want It, You Got It' would be his first record to break into the Billboard charts but his true commercial break came with the ballad 'Straight From The Heart', a top ten single from 1983's Bob Clearmountain produced 'Cuts Like A Knife'. Both the title track and the catchy 'This Time' also cracked the singles charts too.

'Reckless' was the album that broke Adams onto the world arena, the lead song 'Run To You' breaking into charts globally, including becoming his first British hit, and prompting huge media interest in the singer. 'Reckless' dominated the US charts for a fortnight and sales were bolstered by a further run of hits including the ballsy duet with TINA TURNER 'It's Only Love'. In all 'Reckless' played host to no less than five chart singles. The singer became deeply involved with the Bob Geldof led 'Live Aid' famine relief effort of 1985 performing on and co-writing the Canadian contribution song 'Tears Are Not Enough' credited to NORTHERN LIGHTS.

For the follow up Adams issued 'Into The Fire' in 1987. Although cited by many fans as Adams most creative work the reflective and melancholy nature of many of the songs failed to see it repeat the commercial success of 'Reckless'. The album would still make platinum status but only 'Heat Of The Night' made any significant chart impression. A subsequent live record was culled from the world tour to promote 'Into The Fire'.

Adams would make it into the history books with his next release. The ballad 'Everything I Do (I Do It For You)' proved a monster hit across the world. Used as the theme for the Kevin Costner movie 'Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves' the song broke UK records for it's tenacious grip 15 week run on the No. 1 position. In North America 'Everything I Do (I Do It For You)' resided at the top spot for seven weeks.

1991's 'Waking Up The Neighbours' album, produced by Mutt Lange, spawned a whole clutch of hits and sold over three million copies in the US. It would easily grab the No. 1 album position in the UK. Follow up 'Can't Stop This Thing We Started' hit No. 2 in the US whilst both 'I Thought I'd Died And Gone To Heaven' and 'Do I Have To Say The Words?' also scored well. The Mutt Lange co-production credit, not to mention Lange's hand in the song-writing process, had many finding similarities with Lange's other success story DEF LEPPARD. Adams band for these sessions comprised guitarist Keith Scott, bassist Dave Taylor and drummer Mickey Curry. A Belgian concert from 1988, which incorporated cover versions of 'I Fought The Law' and 'Walking After Midnight', stole out as the 'Live!, Live!, Live!' album to plug the gap between studio outings.

A compilation, 'So Far, So Good', included a new track 'Please Forgive Me', which saw Adams soon back in the top ten. 'All For Love', a recording cut with heavyweights STING and ROD STEWART from the movie 'The Three Musketeers' made big MTV impact also stole the No. 1 position in the USA and Germany. Yet another soundtrack song, from the movie 'Don Juan Demarco', had 'Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?' back on the top of the Billboard charts. The accompanying album, the somewhat harder edged '18 'Til I Die', once again had Adams in creative union with Mutt Lange.

Adams began to slip in the USA with 'On A Day Like Today', released in 1998. The record was given a boost in the UK though by the smash hit single 'When You're Gone', this No. 3 seeing Adams paired up with Melanie C. of the SPICE GIRLS.

Universal Records in Japan issued a further "Greatest hits" type package in 2001 novelly slanted at Adams success in the world of celluloid dubbed 'Bryan Adams At The Movies'. JOURNEY guitarist NEAL SCHON would pay homage to Adam's biggest hit to date with his 'Voice' album, the record including a purely guitar instrumental version of '(Everything I Do) I Do It For You'.

BRYAN ADAMS 2002 album 'Spirit (Stallion Of The Cimmaron)' found the songwriter back in movie territory penning the music for the Walt Disney animated epic of the same name. Adams would also strike out in an alternative career path as a photographer in 2002. Following the release of ex LED ZEPPELIN icon ROBERT PLANT's 2002 solo album 'Dreamland' the fabled singer engaged himself in promotion for the esteemed American car manufacturer Cadillac, being photographed for advertising spreads by none other than Adams.

The singer took a novel approach to his 2004 album 'Room Service', recording all the tracks either backstage at venues or in hotel rooms whilst on tour. The record came packaged with a demo acoustic bonus disc entitled 'Stripped', comprising a further fourteen songs. Meantime, Universal Music compiled an album entitled 'The Early Years', a collection of tracks recorded before his debut album.

BRYAN ADAMS joined forces with DEF LEPPARD for Summer 2005 dates across the US, novelly avoiding the regular concert venues and instead seeing the co-headlining stint journeying through America's ball-park stadiums.

Adams sparked a world record breaker with an act of charity later that year. In response to the 2005 Indian Ocean tsunami disaster the singer initiated the signing of a white Fender Stratocaster guitar by a host of guitar legends and Rock stars. Amongst those signees would be BLACK SABBATH's TONY IOMMI, LED ZEPPELIN's JIMMY PAGE, Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC, BRIAN MAY of QUEEN, Ritchie Blackmore of RAINBOW and DEEP PURPLE, members of DEF LEPPARD, Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards from the ROLLING STONES, ERIC CLAPTON, DAVID GILMOUR, JEFF BECK, Pete Townshend of THE WHO, Mark Knopfler, Ray Davies, Liam and Noel Gallagher of OASIS, Paul McCartney, Sting, and BRYAN ADAMS himself. Quite incredibly the instrument was auctioned in November for a staggering $1.6 million dollars, proceeds of which went to the 'Reach Out To Asia' foundation.
