Biography
Renowned Belgian band ENTHRONED, hailing from the Namur and Ghent region, found unintended infamy with the suicide of their drummer Cernunnos (a.k.a. Dan Vandenplas). The sticksman had been a founder member of the group in late 1993 when he united with Lord Sabathan (Franck Lorent) of DYING CORPSE and BLASPHEREION and erstwhile MYSTICA and HYBRID VISCERY guitarist Tsebaoth (Vincent). Antecedent to this, Cernunnos, Lord Sabathan and Fabrice Depireux (a.k.a. 'Namroth Blackthorn') had issued three demos in the late eighties credited to MORBID DEATH.
ENTHRONED released an August 1994 demo 'Blackwinds' and a September split EP with ANCIENT RITES, 'Scared By Darkwinds', prior to signing with Osmose Productions' subsidiary label Evil Omen. Previously, the Tsebaoth and Lord Sabathan pairing had also issued a self titled 1993 demo recording billed as SLANESH.
The band added ex-INFECTED, MAGIA POSTHUMA and HERESIA guitarist Nornagest following completion of the self-produced debut album 'Prophecies Of Pagan Fire', released in October 1995. A genre faithful and suitably caustic slice of blasphemic vitriol, in fact, half of this material had been lifted directly from the 'Blackwinds' demo. ENTHRONED would tour with the likes of BLOOD, ANCIENT RITES, ENSLAVED and MARDUK. However, Tsebaoth would quit in favour of Nebiros, another erstwhile MAGIA POSTHUMA man.
The group manoeuvred over to British label Blackend Records for a second album, 'Towards The Skullthrone Of Satan', with a license for North America being granted to Metal Blade. Just as the musicians were preparing to enter the Hautregard recording studio with engineer André Gielen, Cernunnos, suffering from severe depression, would hang himself on April 19th 1997. With no pause in operations, the group swiftly pulled in ASPHYXIA's Da Cardoen as session drummer. 'Towards The Skullthrone Of Satan' was released in 1997 and notably including VENOM frontman Cronos as guest on the track 'Satan's Realm'.
ENTHRONED recorded a tribute to their late drummer in 1998, 'Regie Sathanas', the album including material written by Cernunnos whilst in his pre ENTHRONED act MORBID DEATH and a cover of SODOM's 'The Conqueror'. Drums were now in the hands of Namroth Blackthorn (Fabrice Depireux) of BLASPHERION.
Touring in Europe found the band as guests to DARK FUNERAL prior to a second bout with HECATE ENTHRONED and USURPER.
The band's fourth album 'The Apocalypse Manifesto' was co-produced by HYPOCRISY's Peter Tägtgren. Here ENTHRONED took a major step upward in terms of quality, thus expanding their audience considerably. Unfortunately a mistake in the manufacturing process would result in the first pressing being devoid of the fifth track 'Post-Mortem Penetrations (Messe Des Saintes Mortes)'. ENTHRONED supported MARDUK on their epic European tour in late 1999.
The debut album was reissued in 1999 by Blackened Records with extra demo tracks, live tracks and the out take 'Post Mortem Penetration'.
Former ENTHRONED guitarist Dimitrus created a new act FLATULATION in 1999 debuting with an intriguingly titled demo 'Autopsy D'une Intoxication Chilli Con Carne'.
During 2000 ENTHRONED lost the services of guitarist Nebiros, Nerath Daemon, also a member of EMPTINESS, swiftly being announced as replacement in time for a short German tour. Following these dates the band entered the studio to record the 'Armoured Bestial Hell' album. Another line-up change found Namroth Blackthorn ousted in favour of Alsvid from the notorious French act SETH. Issued in April 2001, packaged in cover artwork from the hand of Rok of SADISTIK EXEKUTION, 'Armoured Bestial Hell' prompted another run of European shows and a month long stint in America, this despite the September 11th attacks.
The band announced a switch of labels to the Austrian Napalm concern in 2002. A European package tour, billed with AETURNUS, HECATE ENTHRONED, AGATHODAIMON, MȪRK GRYNING and INFERNAL POETRY, ensued during Spring of 2002. They would still be road hungry into January of 2003, headlining a month long European trek in alliance with Greek veterans ROTTING CHRIST and Ireland's PRIMORDIAL. Under the banner 'Days Of Suffering' the band allied themselves with AGATHODAIMON, SETH and DESTINITY for a spate of European dates in April and May.
ENTHRONED set about recording next album 'XES Haereticum' in April of 2004 at Spiderhouse Studios with veteran Thrash producer Harris Johns. In June the band added new guitarist Nguaroth from WAPENSPRAAK EN DRINKGELAG and AGUYNGUERRAN, the new look line-up debuting on 25th July at the Frontline venue in Gent. Following a string of South American shows drummer Glaurung enrolled in October. In a quite surreal turn of events, the group's erstwhile label Blackend Records issued a four CD compilation entitled 'The Blackend Collection'. ENTHRONED were vicious in their condemnation of this box set, especially as song listings were not only mis-ordered and credited tracks excised but that for some unexplainable reason the song 'The Scourge Of God' had been printed on the cover as 'Scourge Of Anal Lust'. In more positive news, ENTHRONED announced the release of their first live album, entitled 'Black Goat Ritual', for issue in 2005 through Somber Records. Lord Sabathon would be announced as sessioning for US act DEMONIC CHRIST album recordings. In early 2005 the band contributed to the Townsend Avalanche Music IMMORTAL tribute album entitled 'Epimythion - Tribute to Immortal' with their rendition of 'Eternal Years on the Path to the Cemetary Gates'. That June drummer Glaurung joined the ranks of EMPTINESS.
The band was announced as engaged in the 'X-Mass Fest Part II' European tour, set to begin in early December and involving MORBID ANGEL, UNLEASHED, PRIMORDIAL and ENSIFERUM. However, these dates would be pulled after UNLEASHED withdrew. Devotees were delivered vinyl re-issues of the first two albums in 2006 through Painkiller Rex Records, the first 100 of which were pressed on rare red vinyl. The band got back into live action in June, appearing at the Graspop Metal Meeting event. However, on October 19th singer Lord Sabathan was excised from the band.
In January 2007 ENTHRONED revealed the return of bassist Phorgath to the group's ranks and that guitarist Nornagest would take over the lead vocals in the group. The band teamed up with SINISTER, VEXED and NECROART for a short Italian tour in May.
