Biography
Debuting on the Mausoleum compilation 'If It's Loud, We're Proud', Belgian outfit OSTROGOTH originally went under the pseudonyms of Red Star, Sphinx, White Shark, Bronco and Grizzly before revealing their true names on the 'Ecstasy And Danger' debut album in 1984. The band had formed sometime during the late 70s, being initially fronted by singer Luc Minne. With the introduction of THE RAG man Rudy Vercruysse joining Hans Van de Kerkhove to form up the twin guitar team in 1981 OSTROGOTH also switched singers to Marc De Brouwer.
OSTROGOTH debuted with the 1983 EP 'Full Moon's Eyes' in 1983. For this outing the band members adopted the pseudonyms of De Brouwer as 'Red Star', Vandekerkhove as 'Sphinx', Vercruysse 'White Shark', drummer Marco Pauwels 'Grizzly' and bassist Marnix Van De Kauter as 'Bronco'. The EP had originally been intended as a self financed effort but after an airing of two tracks on a local radio station Mausoleum Records offered the band a deal. Their first album, 'Ecstasy And Danger' also released by Mausoleum in 1984' and kicking off unconventionally with a huge guitar solo, pulled in favourable reviews across Europe.
The group released a sophomore effort, 'Too Hot', in 1985 before undergoing something of a change for the third album in 1987. A drastic reshuffling of the group saw ex-CROSSFIRE vocalist Peter De Wint replacing original singer Marc De Brouwer. De Windt had actually already recorded with OSTROGOTH, contributing backing vocals on 'Too Hot'. New Brazilian guitarist June Martins came in for Hans Van de Kerckhove and bassist Marnix Van De Kauter was succeeded by Sylvian Charotti. However, this line up soon faltered and folded.
Van De Kauter, Martins and Charotto were soon back in action with a new band entitled HERMETIC BORTHERHOOD. De Wint later joined the Belgian group MYSTERY in the mid 90s and by 1998 was vocalist for AFFAIR. Drummer Mario Pauwels joined SHELLSHOCK. Guitarist Rudy Vercruysse created a covers band RUN 4 H with erstwhile BAD LIZARD singer EddyTermote.
OSTROGOTH reformed for a concert in Athens during 2002. A further release would be the 'Mausoleum: 20th Anniversary Concert' album, including two KILLER tracks alongside live material from erstwhile Mausoleum label mates KILLER and OSTROGOTH, recorded at the Vosselaar Biebob venue in May of 2002. Former OSTROGOTH drummer Mario Pauwels joined Progressive Rock outfit GHIRIBIZZI in 2004.
