Biography
HOBBS' ANGEL OF DEATH was one of the few Australian acts to employ Satanic overtones with 80's Thrash Metal. Peter Hobbs had started his musical career in 1983 with TYRUS, issuing a demo 'He's A Liar', then creating ANGEL OF DEATH in 1986. The following year saw the release of two demos 'Angel Of Death' and 'Virgin Metal Invasion From Down Under'. These sessions were recorded with the assistance of Melbourne act NOTHING SACRED guitarist Mark Wooley, Karl Lean and Sham.
These tapes came to the attention of German label Steamhammer and the 1988 eponymous album was produced by Harris Johns in Berlin. HOBBS' ANGEL OF DEATH had now solidified around Hobb's, NOTHING SACRED guitarist Mark Wooley, former MASS CONFUSION bassist Phil Gresik and ex-NEW RELIGION drummer Darren McMaster-Smith. Back home HOBBS' ANGEL OF DEATH put in their debut live show opening for MORTAL SIN.
In 1989 the first album was issued in Japan as a double package with Canadian Thrashers RAZOR's 'Violent Restitution' album entitled 'Hobb's Angel Of Death Vs. Razor'. However, by 1989 the band had splintered with Hobbs and Wooley enlisting bassist Dave Frew and drummer Bruno Canziani. Following touring the band was then put on ice resulting in Wooley and Frew founding HATRED.
Bassist Phil Gresik would later join the notorious Black Metal band BESTIAL WARLUST and later the equally infamous DESTRȪYER 666. Latterly he has founded LONG VOYAGE BACK. Reports in 2002 suggested that HOBBS' ANGEL OF DEATH had reformed with the return of guitarist Mark Wooley, bassist Dave Frew and drummer Bruno Canziani. This new version of the band incorporated EDEN's Talie Helene on keyboards. However, Woolley exited in February of 2003 and Helene would decamp that July in order to prioritise her own Doom band STONE MAIDEN.
Modern Invasion Music pressed up two early band demos, 'Virgin Metal Invasion From Downunder' and 'Angel Of Death', for the album release 'Hobbs' Stans Crusade'. The legacy was maintained as esteemed US Death Metal combo MALEVOLENT CREATION's July 2004 'Warkult' included a cover of 'Jack The Ripper'. In September former HOBBS' ANGEL OF DEATH keyboard player Talie Hélène joined forces with celebrity Wiccan singer Wendy Rule and Rachel Samuel on cello to provide double-bass in the project ZAUBEREI.
