Biography

KAHVAS JUTE, an early seventies, Sydney based Progressive Rock act, would be one of the first career steps for the highly respected bassist Bob Daisley. Active from 1970 onwards the band issued a solitary album 'Wide Open' during 1971 on the Festival progressive imprint Infinity, this featuring twin lead guitar workouts from erstwhile guitarist Dennis Wilson and Tim Gaze. Earlier, Wilson and bass player Bob Daisley had been members of BARRINGTON DAVIS & POWERPACT, this unit also featuring singer Barrington Davis and drummer Brain Boness. Wilson had already made his mark on the Australian scene citing credits with antecedent acts such as THE RIDDLES, KEVIN BIBLE & THE BOOK and 1968's THE 9TH CIRCLE. By 1968 BARRINGTON DAVIS & POWERPACT had evolved into MECCA, Daisley and Wilson dispensing with Davis and being joined by drummer Robin Lewis and, in 1970, New Zealand singer Clive Coulsen. The latter would go on to achieve recognition as road manager for LED ZEPPELIN and co-manager of BAD COMPANY. MECCA released the 7" single 'Black Sally' / 'Side Street Man' on the Festival label in March 1970 before Coulsen opted out to take up employment with LED ZEPPELIN. That June, Wilson and Daisley founded KAHVAS JUTE, enlisting Tim Gaze and Dannie Davidson. Both had been members of Sydney outfit TAMAM SHUD with Gaze also having experience with STONEHENGE and Davidson with THE SUNSETS and THE FOUR STRANGERS.

The 'Wide Open' sessions were completed in just three days at Festival Studios in Sydney with house producer Pat Aulton. Although the KAHVAS JUTE album broke into the national Australian charts Gaze would relinquish his post to rejoin TAMAM SHUD and KAHVAS JUTE would not record again. The band bade farewell with a swan song performance in June 1971 at the Arts Factory in Sydney before relocating to the UK to try their luck on the London scene. Here, bassist Scott Maxey of the NUTWOOD RUG BAND temporarily stepped in on bass, as did it seems David O'List of THE NICE, before Daisley rejoined his colleagues.

With the eventual demise of the group Wilson would very briefly associate himself with the JEFF BECK group in 1973. Wilson then made his way back to Australia, reforming KAHVAS JUTE in May 1973 with Davidson and Maxey. This second version of the band lasted little over a year but did not record. Peter Roberts, previously withy BAND OF LIGHT, superseded Maxey in March 1974, but in May the group folded. Dannie Davidson teamed up with BAND OF LIGHT whilst Wilson and Roberts founded CHARIOT. Upon the break up of TAMAM SHUD in 1972 Gaze would wind his way through a succession of acts including MISS UNIVERSE, MIGHTY KONG, ARIEL and ROSE TATTOO.

Daisley stayed in England where he would journey through such acts as CHICKENSHACK, WIDOWMAKER, RAINBOW, the OZZY OSBOURNE 'Blizzard Of Ozz' band, URIAH HEEP, GARY MOORE's band, sessioned on BLACK SABBATH's 1987 'Eternal Idol' album and toured with DIO in 2000. In between these stints Daisley would make his mark as principle lyricist for OZZY OSBOURNE and as bass anchor on many of GARY MOORE's records.

Daisley and Gaze would reunite post millennium to forge Blues act THE HOOCHIE COOCHIE MEN. The bass player would then launch his LIVING LOUD all star combo comprising singer JIMMY BARNES, DEEP PURPLE guitarist STEVE MORSE and URIAH HEEP drummer Lee Kerslake.

Quite unexpectedly, KAHVAS JUTE reformed in late 2004. Daisley, Wilson and Gaze pulled in drummer Clifford Hoad to record new songs in January 2005.
