BUFFALO

Biography

Sydney Hard Rockers BUFFALO were founded in 1971 when Blues Rockers HEAD. The band's main singer was the English born Dave Tice whose experience had seen him journey through THE ODD COLOURS, STRANGE BREW, ORIGINAL PLASTIC FOOT and the CAPITAL SHOW BAND before HEAD.

HEAD, bringing in second vocalist in ex-MANDALA front man Alan Milano, had issued one single in 1971 'Hobo' before replacing guitarist Neil Jensen with another ex MANDALA man John Baxter. As BUFFALO the band opted for a primeval thunderously heavy sound and became the first Australian act to sign to Progressive Rock label Vertigo. The remaining HEAD veterans were guitarist John Baxter, bassist Pete Wells and drummer Paul Balbi.

After the debut 1972 album 'Dead Forever' (which came with the advice 'Play this album loud' and a skull album cover) Milano and Balbi quit. MANDALA / RED MATTRESS BLUES BAND's Jimmy Economu took the drum stool for 1973's 'Volcanic Rock'. The album cover for this sophomore release caused a stir as it featured a poorly executed piece of artwork depicting a woman 'erupting'! In keeping with a theme the credits now read 'Play this album even louder!'.

1974's 'Only Want You For Your Body' kept up the momentum and the band's strong sales. Typically the sleeve artwork was replete with a corpulent woman bound to a torture device while the band looked on. By mid 1974 former BAND OF LIGHT / LOTUS / WOLFE guitarist Norm Roue was enlisted as BUFFALO became a twin guitar band. This union did not last though as Baxter opted out shortly after. The guitarist at first created SUBMARINE XI uniting once again with Milano before this unit evolved into the highly respected SOUTHERN CROSS. By 1977 Baxter was involved with BOY RACER.

BUFFALO welcomed KARL TAYLOR on guitar for 1976's 'Mother's Choice'. The band's label had rejected the group's original title of 'Songs For The Frustrated Housewife'. Tice also issued a solo single 'Sweet Little Rock n' Roller'. Before the album hit the stores both Taylor and Roue had quit to join the BLUE ALIENS. Taylor issued a solo album 'Taylor Maid' and then formed HUNTRESS. Ex-THE ACTION and DRAIN Englishman CHRIS TURNER made up the numbers.

BUFFALO pulled in SWEET WINE and LLOYD'S WORLD guitarist Colin Stead but his tenure was brief. Before the end of the year Wells bailed out to create one of the seminal names in Australian Rock ROSE TATTOO. His place was filled by Ross Simms and BUFFALO supported RAINBOW for their November 1976 Australian dates.

The 'Average Rock n' Roller' album found the band pursuing a more commercial path. Disillusioned BUFFALO had split even before the album was released. Balbi, now a member of British band THE COUNT BISHOPS invited Tice back to Britain to front his band. Tice also had a stint with the COBRAS in 1979.

Turner allied himself with ROSE TATTOO before touring as part of TEN YEARS AFTER and forming MAN O WAR in 1979. He stuck with Pete Wells in his 1983 band SCATTERED ACES. Turner has also released solo albums. Tice made his return to Australia in 1980 as part of THE HEADHUNTERS with ex AC/DC man Mark Evans and former ROSE TATTOO guitarist Mick Cocks.

BUFFALO had a brief reunion in 2000 for their former manager's 50 birthday. Joining Tice onstage was Wells, Economu, Milano, Baxter and Turner. THE DAVE TICE BAND issued an album the same year 'Lay Down With The Dogs'. The Italian Akarma label re-issued 'Dead Forever' on CD during September 2005. Aztec Music re-issued the first trio of BUFFALO albums in 2006 in re-mastered format with additional bonus tracks.
