Biography
Colourful and brash hard rockin' outfit. Emanating from the industrial town of Newcastle, THE SCREAMING JETS have stampped their mark on the Australian hard rock scene in no uncertain terms with numerous chart placings, platinum and gold albums and a consistent and gruelling tour schedule.
The band was founded by vocalist Dave Gleeson and guitarist Grant Walmesley whilst both were still attending an all boys private high school. This formative act journeyed through numerous names from SUDDEN IMPACT, ASPECTS and after bassist Paul Woseen joined the ranks as THE LOVEBOMBS, the band being finalized with guitarist Richard Lara and drummer Brad Heaney.
Becoming THE SCREAMING JETS the band were snapped up by the Roo Art label (inking their deal in a Lear jet flying at 10'000 feet!) and their debut album 'All For One' and accompanying single 'Better' gave the band the landmark honour of being the first domestic act to break the Australian top ten at the first attempt. Quite surreally the album was produced by Steve James, the son of the lovable English 'Carry On' film star Sid James.
The band soon found themselves appreciatted on the international rock scene too and 1991 saw forays into Europe including a date at London's Marquee club before an appearance in America at the Rip magazine party sharing the stage with PEARL JAM, SOUNDGARDEN and ALICE IN CHAINS.
had the band firmly back in the charts at home with the 'Living In England' EP quickly capitalised on by second album 'Tear Of Thought'. Not all went the band's way though as following a liveshow broadcast to three million viewers at the prestigious State Of Origin football match in Sydney the Australian Rugby League withheld payment citing the bands alledged "unruly" behaviour as the cause. Further touring had the band banned from 16 venues!
The following year had THE SCREAMING JETS riding the charts again with their cover of THE BIRTHDAY PARTY's 'Shiver'. It's follow up 'Helping Hand' fared even better staying lodged in the charts for an incredible 8 months.
With success at home THE SCREAMING JETS returned to Europe for a month long headline tour of England before shows in America with UGLY KID JOE. Returning to Britain the band found themselves as valuable support to THE QUIREBOYS up front of a showing in Germany at the Rock Am Ring festival alongside ROBERT PLANT, BLACK CROWES and DEF LEPPARD then scattered shows across Europe and Scandinavia. The touring schedule though took its toll as THE SCREAMING JETS welcomed in new recruits drummer Craig Rosevaar and guitarist Jimmy Hocking.
By now the band were a major draw in Australia and 1994 had them playing to enormous crowds at a series of festivals. 1995 saw their 'The Screaming Jets' album launched with an internet gig which took place at a notorious bordello owned by one Madam Lash! 1996 had the band spending most of the year on the road prior to recording of fourth album 'World Gone Crazy' for BMG.
Reuniting in 2001 for the 'Forever' tour the band recorded their show at Newcastle Workers on the 9th June for the double album 'Live Forever'. Paul Woseen took time out to perform bass for Sydney's MORGANA AND THE THE MONSTARS.
The band was re-formed in April of 2004, heading straight out onto the road in their homeland to undertake a massive 60 date tour. A comeback single, 'Heart Of The Matter', also scored well on radio. SCREAMING JETS, pushing the single 'Right Place, Wrong Time', would lend high profile support to VELVET REVOLVER's 2005 Australian dates.
On February 25th 2007 over 10,000 AC/DC fans gathered at Claremont Showground for a Bon Scott tribute concert. Music was provided by THE SCREAMING JETS with ROSE TATTOO and THE ANGELS.
