Biography

A Nottingham based theatrical Black Metal band way before their time, HELL were local heroes and their influence could later be seen plainly in the commercially successful SABBAT. The band, included ex-RACE AGAINST TIME vocalist Dave G. Halliday and former PARALEX trio of guitarist Kev Bower, bass player Tony Speakman and drummer Tim Bowler. Both Bowler and Speakman had an even earlier tradition with TOKIO ROSE, the drummer also having served with Grantham's OVERLORD.

HELL toured extensively, supporting the likes of THIN LIZZY, JAGUAR, MORE, URIAH HEEP and MAMA'S BOYS. Their self financed single, 1983's 'Save Us From Those Who Would Save Us' recorded at Ebony Records studios in Hull, sold well but was slated in 'Kerrang!' magazine who simply failed to comprehend the band's direction. A further cassette single followed in 1984 featuring 'In The Depths Of Despair', 'Land Of The Living Dead' and 'Plague And Fire'. The band also drafted in an additional guitarist in Sean Kellen.

HELL also demoed 'Devil's Deadly Weapon' before signing to Belgian label Mausoleum, but two weeks prior to recording a proposed album the label collapsed. Disillusioned, HELL split and, sadly, Halliday later committed suicide by gassing himself with exhaust fumes in a car.

Bassist Tony Speakman was to join SYZ releasing the 1986 single 'Rock n' Roll Children', while drummer Tim Bowler formed LIFE AFTER. In later years Tony Speakman would be found on the covers circuit with RAINBOW tribute act RAINBOW RISING.

In April 2008 it was learned that Kev Bower, Tony Speakman and Tim Bowler were recording a new set of HELL Material for an album in league with singer Martin Walkyier, of SABBAT, RETURN TO THE SABBAT, THE CLAN DESTINED and SKYCLAD, plus SABBAT guitarist Andy Sneap.
